ALTERNATIVES FOR THE PROTECTION OF DELUGE VALVE SYSTEMS FROM FIRE, BLAST, AND FREEZING

Protecting deluge valve systems located in high hazard areas or locations requiring freeze protection has traditionally involved dedicated sprinkler buildings or large specialty built cabinets. These structures require space in what are usually congested process areas along with additional piping to the structure and out to each protection zone. Unique methods developed for offshore installations, now allow the ability to mount the control and instrumentation for deluge systems remotely from the deluge valve itself. This can provide fire, blast, and/or freeze protection for the deluge system in minimal space while greatly reducing additional piping requirments.

Larry Rimel is a Master Instructor at the Texas A&M Industrial Fire School and Pro-board certified as both a NFPA 1081 Instructor and a NFPA 1041 Advanced Exterior Firefighter. Larry has over 30 years of experience in solving problems in high risk/high value fire protection applications.

Joan Diaz, lead fire protection applications engineer for Bermad has a B.S. in mechanical engineering and two Masters degrees with over 17 years of experience working with hydraulic control valves.
